So, how much Vitamin D do you actually need every day?

‘How much Vitamin D should we be getting every day?’ has long been a question on our confused minds. On one hand, we’re constantly told of the health benefits of Vitamin D. But, on the flip side, we’re always reminded to slather ourselves in sunscreen to block out one of its main sources: the sun.

So, what’s the truth about Vitamin D? Do we really need to be getting it every day?

We asked Dr. Michael Holick, one of the world’s foremost experts on vitamin D, to get to the bottom of it. According to him, the best source of it is the sun.

“I recommend you get only enough sun exposure to establish and maintain healthy 25-vitamin D levels and to improve your psychological health as Mother Nature intended.”

And how much is that? “Five to ten minutes, arms and legs, three times a week, is adequate,” says Dr. Holick.

He says it’s about finding the right balance between sun exposure and sun protection. Look for sunscreens, which filter UVB, letting you absorb the Vitamin D, but still protect you from harm. Dr. Holick recommends Solar D, which promotes increased production of Vitamin D in the skin necessary to prevent Vitamin D deficiency-related cancers, depression, flus and many other illnesses.
